Seattle-Based Cruise Ship Dumps Waste in Glacier Bay National Park

Seattle-Based Cruise Ship Dumps Waste in Glacier Bay National Park

Holland America dumped 17,000 gallons of grey water into Glacier Bay National Park. See the story on Alaska Public Radio’s website. While Holland America claims that the illegal dumping was an accident, it went unchecked for 25 minutes and the cruise line avoided reporting it to the Coast Guard. Perhaps it is because Holland America’s parent company, Carnival, is under federal probation for repeatedly dumping toxic and grey water waste into the ocean.

Holland America was fined $250 from the National Park Service and $17,000 by the federal government. Environmental groups are calling for the National Park Service to ban cruise ships from Glacier Bay National Park.

Carnival reported a record $3.2 billion profit last year. Cruise ships operate with impunity. Stringent and enforceable policies must be put into place.
